the elements have beaten me.

This summer I lived in Washington for 6 weeks.  Granted 6 weeks isn't really that long of time but I like to think that I experienced a good amount of Washington while I was there.

Today I woke up to the pounding of rain and wind against the window.  I get up and look outside to find that today is a day dedicated to rain.  The sky is dark.  The clouds have created their mist that spills over the mountains.  It's cold and the wind makes everything more dramatic.  I sit on the couch, grab my book, and just read, every once and a while glancing out the window to make sure it's still okay that I haven't really done anything productive today and I don't really want to.

You see, in Washington I learned the rain is just like every other day.  No its doesn't rain every day there like some might think but the rain doesn't stop people from doing their every day lives.  They have rain jackets and boots.  And abundance of umbrellas and hoods.  And when all else fails, it's just a little rain and you'll dry off in no time.  But in California rains stops us dead in our tracks.  At least those of us who live in this house.  Rain gives you a get out of real like free card for the day.  A chance to read, think, write, enjoy your coffee for once instead of drinking it just for the caffeine.

When the rain comes California gladly surrenders.  At least my California.  And today I will sit and drink wonderful coffee with people I love, read my book, write my thoughts and enjoy the rain.  Because the elements have won and I am a proud white-flag-holding-surrendering-rest-on-rainy-days-enthusiast.
