Tuesday afternoon there was a major earthquake that hit Haiti...this begun the mass destruction and toll on the impoverished country. At first, the realization of the magnitude of the situation was something that seemed much smaller than it really is. I came home to my roommate furious about the world and feeling completely helpless in a time when there is so much to be done. I can relate to her. While I will go to bed tonight in my home my brothers and sisters will be grieving and at an incomprehensible loss. These are her words in an email.
"They're estimating that 100,000 people died in Haiti's earthquake last night.
They're estimating that 3 milllion people - one third of Haiti's population are physically affected by this tragedy.
And people's who's hearts, spirits, and minds are affected?
Let's say each person who died knew 500 hundred people,
500 times 100000,
we have 50 million people mourning today
this is awful.
we are Christians,
we are servants of the Most High,
and it's our job to figure something out,
what are we going to do about this?"
We should do something. We have to do something because we are called to and I know that if Jesus were to come right now he would not be satified with seeing me just sitting doing nothing when I know what I do and have acccess to things and priveldges that others do not. So for now I will pray. Pray that God is earnestly working in Haiti and that he will be glorified in this situation. That he will break our hearts for what breaks his and that through this overwhelming and uncomprehensible disaster, we will be able to show the love that Christ shows us. I know God is moving...he always is. I know that he is capable of anything and I trust that he knows what he's doing and that he will use the body of Christ in a way we cannot even fathom.
